• The first week of the season should be telling for the Vandals. They play at Long Beach State – which returns four starters from a 22-win team – and at Montana, where they lost by 42 a year ago.

“I think those two games right off the bat will give us a huge read (on our team),” Verlin said.

• Two weeks after the difficult road swing, the Vandals host Washington State and are at Oregon State in a three-day stretch.

• UI also has a neutral-court game with Boise State at the Idaho Center in Nampa, what Verlin hopes is the start of an annual game vs. BSU with the teams in different conferences.
