Eastern Oregon’s rebounding edge sinks Whitworth

Korrie Bourn, a transfer from Community Colleges of Spokane, had 11 rebounds to guide a 42-33 advantage as Eastern Oregon knocked off host Whitworth 67-63 in nonconference women’s basketball Tuesday.

EOU (3-0) outscored the Pirates (0-1) 20-11 from the free-throw line. Kyle Miller (Cheney) led EOU with 12 points.

The Pirates’ Lexi Belcher scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half. Kayla Johnson (Colfax) added 10 rebounds.

Men’s soccer

Gonzaga forward Clark Phillips was named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year after leading the Bulldogs in goals, assists and points.

Three GU sophomores made the second team: midfielders Nick Hamer (Mead High) and James Matern (Ferris) and defender Josh Phillips. GU forward Nate Pacheco joined Phillips on the All-Freshman team.

Football

Junior running back Ronnie Thomas was named NWC Offensive Player of the Week after rallying Whitworth to a 40-34 season-ending win at Puget Sound with touchdown runs of 17 and 37 yards in the final 6 minutes.

Men’s swimming

Whitworth senior Rory Buck was named NWC Athlete of the Week after he broke his Whitworth Aquatic Center record in the 200-yard breaststroke by 4 seconds last Friday. Buck’s record time was 2 minutes, 2.14 seconds.

Girls basketball

Sydney Williams scored 22 points, hitting 6 of 10 field goals and 6 of 7 free throws, as Coeur d’Alene opened with a 65-32 nonleague win over visiting Moscow. … Elsewhere, Dani Failor hit 7 of 8 field goals and added six rebounds as Post Falls recorded a 60-34 win over visiting Sandpoint. PF freshman Kelcie Hedge had seven steals. … Cieana Close and Josie Coder combined for 21 points and Lakeland forced 29 turnovers during a 45-35 win at Priest River. PR’s Liz Halcro had 12 points and nine rebounds. … McKenna Stewart and Taylor Sheppard scored 10 points apiece to lead host Kellogg to a 42-30 win over Lakeside. … Kara Wenstrom’s 10 points guided host Timberlake to a 49-17 win over Wallace at Spirit Lake.
