CCS finishes third at NWAACC tournament

Community Colleges of Spokane’s volleyball team made a spirited effort to stay alive in the NWAACC tournament, but the Sasquatch’s season came to a close with a loss to host Mt. Hood Saturday in Gresham, Ore.

CCS entered the day in a tough situation, in which one loss would end its season.

The Sasquatch beat Bellevue (22-12) 25-22, 15-25, 15-11 in their opening match. Kate Hart had nine kills and Brigitte Lowe had 14 digs and six kills for CCS.

Hart led the way again in the Sasquatch’s next match, a 23-25, 27-25, 15-9 win over Blue Mountain (29-12). Hart had a team-high nine kills, Lindsay Bronkhorst had 12 digs and Joni Nagy added 21 assists and 10 digs for CCS.

Against Linn-Benton (39-10), the Sasquatch again had to come back after losing the first set. Hart had nine kills and Allison Reed added 11 as CCS won 23-25, 25-9, 15-12.

Their next match was a 26-24, 22-25, 15-10 season-ending loss to Mt. Hood (33-4). Mt. Hood advanced to today’s final round against Walla Walla.

CCS took third place and finished the season with a 37-6 record.

• North Idaho beat Mineral Area 21-25, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12 to take ninth place at the NJCAA tournament in West Plains, Mo.

NIC finished 25-10.

• Morgan Odale had 23 kills to guide Utah to a 25-18, 25-17, 23-25, 25-15 win over Washington State in a Pac-12 Conference match in Salt Lake City.

Meagan Ganzer had 15 kills and Marcelina Glab had seven blocks to lead the Cougars.

Camry Irwin passed out 29 assists and Shawna Lum had 12 digs for Washington State.

The Utes improved to 10-20 overall and 5-16 in the Pac-12, moving ahead of the Cougars (12-18, 4-16) in conference standings.

WSU plays at 10th-ranked Washington on Tuesday and Friday.

• Krista Vansant led three players in double figures with 13 kills as No. 10 Washington (21-7, 13-7) swept Colorado (6-23, 1-20) in a Pac-12 Conference match in Boulder, Colo.

Wrestling

North Idaho made quick work of Simon Fraser and Yakima Valley at the Cardinal Duals in Coeur d’Alene.

After a 36-13 victory over Simon Fraser, the Cardinals routed Yakima Valley 40-3.

Joaquin Calderon (125 pounds), Jarrett Morrill (141), Ryan Zumwalt (157), Wilhelm Meyer (165), Kyle Sweedman (174) and Nicholas Wasierski (197) all won both of their matches for NIC.

Swimming

Aaron Vaccaro won three men’s individual events and Whitworth’s women swept five relays as both Pirates teams finished first at the Northwest Invitational at Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore.
