In brief: Two fire station name changes OK’d

From Local Reports

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Fire Department commissioners voted this week to change the names of two fire stations.

Station 4 in Otis Orchards and Station 5 on Sullivan Road near the Industrial Park were the latest stations before the board. “It was pretty obvious at the end of the day with Station 4,” said Deputy Chief Larry Rider. That one will be named the Otis Orchards Fire Station.

Station 5 was less clear-cut, but commissioners liked the suggestion to name it Sullivan Station. The name changes will become official when the department puts in new signs, which are not in the budget this year, Rider said. Rapidly approaching winter weather may also delay putting in new signs. “I can probably find the money,” he said.

The department is working to change the names of each of its 10 stations from a number to a more easily remembered name. The first to be renamed was Greenacres Fire Station on East Sprague. The department has been asking for public input in advance of each name change.

State auditor finds no errors for 2010

SPOKANE VALLEY – The city of Spokane Valley has earned a clean financial audit for 2010 from the Washington State Auditor’s Office. In years past the Auditor’s Office reprimanded the city for missing credit card statements and missing credit card receipts, but the annual audits have been steadily improving.

The 2009 audit had no major “findings” but auditors did find some minor errors in the way some funds were classified in financial statements. The 2010 audit did not report any errors.
