In brief: Clinics offer free flu shots for kids
SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane Regional Health District will hold a family flu shot clinic Saturday at the North Spokane YMCA, 10727 N. Newport Highway, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Oct. 29 at the Spokane Valley YMCA, 2421 N. Discovery Place, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The clinics are free for age 6 months to 18 years. Adult flu shots are $10. Vaccines are available on a first-come, first-served basis, while the shots lasts. Flumist will be available for healthy children age 2 to 18.

Chefs to compete in cook-off battle
RIVERSIDE – River Park Square and Oil & Vinegar will host “Battle of the Chefs” on Saturday, from 2 to 4 p.m., in the first floor Atrium.
The event will include a cake display open for public voting, with all cash donation votes benefiting Second Harvest Food Bank. The cakes will be provided by Spokane Community College students.
Six River Park Square chefs will compete in an hourlong cook-off. Chefs include Josh Stidman of Twigs, Kevin Anderson of Oil & Vinegar, Dale Fruin of Cruisers, Tim Simpson, of Rock City Grill, Mr. Chung of Sushi Maru and Javauna Hollowell of P.F. Chang’s. Chefs will have 30 minutes to prep, an hour to cook, a Bunsen burner and two secret ingredients to win first place.
Cork and Keg tickets available
SPOKANE VALLEY – Tickets are now on sale for the Spokane Cork and Keg Festival, Nov. 12 at the Mirabeau Park Hotel, 1100 N. Sullivan Road, from 7 to 10 p.m.
The evening will include hors d’oeuvres by Chef Curtis Smith and the Inland Northwest Culinary Academy and live music by the Martini Brothers. Sample from among more than 100 wines and 30 handcrafted beers and purchase favorites from the wine store.

GU coach to speak on teamwork
LOGAN – Kelly Graves, Gonzaga University women’s basketball coach, will share his insights into the importance of teamwork and how to get the most from people in a discussion, “Lessons for Success on and Off the Court,” on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Herak Room of the McCarthey Athletic Center, 801 N. Cincinnati St.

P.e.a.c.h. founder to be honored
SEATTLE – Brightspirit Hendrix, founder of People for Environmental Action and Community Health (P.e.a.c.h.) will be honored on Saturday at the University of Washington’s Women’s Center’s gala, Women of Courage: Inspiring a New World.
Hendrix is one of 14 women who will be recognized for impacting the communities they serve and whose hard work set the foundations for a new society based on social justice and equality. Hendrix was nominated by Washington Supreme Court Justice Debra Stevens and is the only woman to be honored from Eastern Washington. She founded the organization to increase access and affordability of locally produced organic produce.
Yard waste pick up set for Saturday
WEST CENTRAL – The West Central Neighborhood Association will provide a Clean Green yard waste collection on Saturday at Nettleton and Bridge streets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Grass, leaves, weeds, pine needles, pine cones and branches less than 3 inches in diameter are acceptable yard waste. Rocks and garbage will not be collected.
The West Central neighborhood covers south of Indiana Avenue to the Spokane River and west of Monroe Street to the Spokane River. A driver’s license or utility bill is required to verify residence in the West Central neighborhood.
