Two pets killed: Spokane firefighters exit a house at 1009 E. Glass after putting out a fire in the basement Wednesday. Firefighters quickly extinguished the small fire, which had started about 9:45 a.m., said Battalion Chief Clive Jones. Crews undertook a search of the dwelling because it was not known whether the occupants, both in their 70s, might still be inside. There were no injuries, but heavy smoke filled the house and a dog and cat were killed. (Christopher Anderson)
