In brief: Event will mark U.S. Constitution

An event commemorating the adoption of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17, 1787, will be held Saturday at Riverfront Park.

The Esther Reed Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is putting on a historical dramatization at 1:30 p.m. next to the park fountain at Howard Street and Spokane Falls Boulevard.

The drama is based on the adoption of the country’s guiding document and will depict a town crier giving the news of its signing, with actors dressed in period garb.

The free, nonpolitical educational event is open to the public, said Sue Cagle of the DAR.

Deputies capture jingling burglar

A burglar described only as a man who jingled as he ran away was captured by a Spokane County sheriff’s K-9 team and patrol deputies early Wednesday.

Sheriff’s K-9 Jet found Brian James Blankenship, 44, hiding in a bush at a home on East Salmon Avenue after a homeowner said he’d surprised a burglar in his garage in the 100 block of West Falcon Avenue about 5:15 a.m., according to a news release by Sgt. Dave Reagan.

The only description offered by the homeowner was that the thief made a “jingling” noise as he ran, but Deputies Mark Melville and Bob Bond were able to track him with the help of Jet.

Blankenship surrendered to police and was booked into jail on a felony residential burglary charge. He had a pocketful of coins that jingled as he moved, Reagan said.

Felon arrested after standoff

A 24-year-old felon prohibited from possessing firearms remains in jail on $200,000 bond after he was arrested during a SWAT team standoff early Wednesday.

Jeffery C. Salvage appeared in Superior Court on charges of first-degree robbery and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. Two women were confronted at 3006 N. Hamilton St. at 10:40 p.m. Tuesday by two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun. The gunman demanded their purses, and the women dropped them and ran. The second man was not arrested, according to court documents.

Police recovered a pistol while executing a search warrant at 2924 N. Hamilton St., where a standoff led to Salvage’s arrest. They also recovered a debit card stolen in the robbery.

Salvage has convictions for second-degree burglary and second-degree robbery.
