GU pair on Pan Am team
College basketball: Gonzaga seniors Katelan Redmon and Kayla Standish, both first-team All-West Coast Conference last season, have been named to the USA Pan American Games team that will compete in Guadalajara, Mexico, Oct. 21-25.
The team was selected by the USA Basketball Women’s National Team committee, including head coach Ceal Barry.
The team will begin training in Houston on Oct. 15.
The team is made up of players from mostly midmajor schools. It includes seven seniors, three juniors, one sophomore and a high school senior, Breanna Stewart out of New York, who has committed to Connecticut.
The players could potentially miss 10 days with their school teams.
GU coach Kelly Graves said he wasn’t going to deny his players a chance to play for the national team, even if the timing wasn’t ideal.
“This doesn’t happen to schools like us very often,” Graves said. “The higher-profile kids usually play on the international teams. I’m thrilled for them, as it’s a great experience.”
Gonzaga will open against Hofstra on Nov. 11.

Tinkle commits to Gonzaga
College basketball: Ellie Tinkle, a 6-foot-1 forward and two-time all-state player for Missoula Big Sky, said she would attend Gonzaga next year, a decision she said was made easier after watching her older sister, Jocelyn, go to Stanford.
“She was one of my biggest reasons to go out of state,” Ellie said Tuesday. “She has really flourished as a player and a person. She has created her own life, which we didn’t expect, because we’re such home homebodies.”
Tinkle is the daughter of former Ferris star Wayne Tinkle, who is also the Montana men’s coach and a former Grizzly standout, as is her mother, Lisa.
Tinkle, who averaged 15 points and 12 rebounds last year, chose the Zags over Montana and Colorado.
