In brief: Whitney tops 1,000 points
Hockey: Ray Whitney keeps getting better with age.
One month shy of turning 40, the former Spokane Chiefs star and Phoenix Coyotes forward became the 79th player in NHL history to reach 1,000 points.
Whitney, who won a Memorial Cup with Spokane in 1991 and a Stanley Cup with Carolina in 2006, set up Phoenix linemate Radim Vrbata for a second-period goal in a 4-0 win over Anaheim on Saturday night to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Whitney has played in 1,126 NHL games, with seven different teams, since his debut during the 1991-92 season. He has scored 365 goals and recorded 636 assists.
“It hasn’t been overly easy, I’ve had to earn what I’ve done,” Whitney told NHL.com. “There’s been a couple of times where it didn’t look like it was going to go on any further so this is something I’m very proud of.”
