Lake City streak ends
Meridian halts 31-game run; WV pitchers match no-hitters
Lake City softball coach Laura Tolzmann called it a challenge – a good test for her team.
It was the kind of test the Timberwolves aren’t used to.
Lake City (5-1), which went 26-0 last season en route to the Idaho 5A state title, saw its 31-game winning streak – dating back to the 2010 state tournament – come to an end during the weekend.
The 1-0 loss in the Idaho Sporting Goods tournament on Saturday was to tournament-host Meridian, and was also the first time standout junior pitcher Casey Stangel had lost in 30 starts for Lake City.
Stangel, who has tossed three no-hitters this season, only gave up one hit in the loss – Courtney Pena’s solo home run to left-center field.
Stangel – who is committed to play college softball at the University of Missouri – is blogging for ESPNHS this season. You can follow her blog at espn.go.con/blog/high-school/softball.
Line drives
In a doubleheader against Pullman on March 24, West Valley pitchers Brooklyn Robinson and Kelli Peckham each threw no-hitters as the Eagles won 10-0 and 19-0. Both games only went five innings because of the 10-run rule. Robinson struck out 11 in the 10-0 win for WV (2-0 Great Northern League), while Peckham fanned 12 batters in the 19-0 victory. … Central Valley (3-0 Greater Spokane League) pitcher Carli Riordan is 2-0 for the undefeated Bears and homered in wins over Mead and Rogers last week.
