In brief: Drop yard debris at fire stations

SPOKANE COUNTY – Two free chipping and composting events will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The locations are Spokane County Fire District 4 Station 49 at Highway 395 and Monroe Road in north Spokane County and Spokane County Fire District 8 Station 82 at 12100 E. Palouse Highway in south Spokane County. Residents are invited to bring woody yard debris for free disposal. Stumps, soil, lumber, root balls and trash will not be accepted.

Residents can attend a composting seminar and receive free compost bins. People can also trade in old burn barrels, which are illegal, for a free compost bin. Residents are limited to one free bin per household, and those signing up for the seminar will be asked to show identification.

The event is sponsored by the Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency, the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

High Drive bluff cleanup planned

COMSTOCK – Volunteers are needed for the Friends of the High Drive bluff trash cleanup Saturday at the intersection of Bernard Street and High Drive from 9 a.m. and noon.

Volunteers are asked to wear leather gloves, sturdy boots and weather-appropriate clothing. Hats, sunscreen, water and energy bars are also suggested.

YoungLives benefit features pianos

Logan – The Gibliano Brothers and the Longhorn Barbecue will host the second annual Micros for Mamas at 6 p.m. Friday at New Community Church, 1003 E. Trent Ave.

The festive evening includes live entertainment by the Gibliano Brothers, a silent auction and beer from breweries including Northern Lights, Budge Brothers, Elysian, Alaskan, Twelve String and Golden Hills.

Tickets are $25 and include a commemorative beer glass and five beer samples.

Proceeds from the event will benefit YoungLives Spokane, a nonprofit organization that mentors and supports teen parents and their kids.

Visit library during statewide event

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane Public Library and Spokane County Library District will participate in “Snapshot: One Day in the Life of Washington Libraries” today. The statewide project helps illustrate the importance of libraries for Washington residents through a collection of statistics, stories and photographs. 

Members of the community are invited to visit local libraries, fill out comment forms and have their pictures taken. Visitors can also take photos of themselves, friends and family at the library and upload them to the library Facebook pages at facebook.com/spokane library or facebook.com/ SpokaneCountyLibrary District.

Animator to speak at Whitworth

SPOKANE COUNTY – On Friday and Saturday, Tess Martin, a Seattle-based animator, will visit Whitworth University to give a lecture and workshop. Both events are free.

The lecture will be in the student gallery of the Lied Center for the Visual Arts on Friday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. The workshop is on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Lied arts center. Space is limited.

Martin has been making short films since 2005.
