In brief: Scholarship applications due Friday

SPOKANE VALLEY – Applications for the Sam Campbell Memorial Scholarship are now being accepted. The award was created as a tribute to Campbell by his family. Campbell was a former community leader in commercial real estate and a strong supporter of the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce.

The annual scholarship awards $500 to local high school seniors planning to enroll in a college, university or vocational school business program after graduation. The college scholarship will be awarded directly to the institution of choice after registration is confirmed for fall 2012.

Applications are available on the Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce website at www.spokanevalley chamber.org, under the Chamber Foundation tab. Applications must be submitted by Friday, by email at info@spokanevalley chamber.org, by hand or by mail at the Greater Spokane Valley Chamber of Commerce, 9507 E. Sprague Ave., Spokane Valley, WA 99206.

Rockford, Fairfield named Tree City communities

SPOKANE COUNTY – Two small south Spokane County towns were recently notified they were named Tree City USA communities for 2012.

The town of Rockford is making its first appearance on the Tree City USA list while the nearby town of Fairfield is marking its eighth year on the list. Towns and cities must have a tree board or department, a tree care ordinance, a community forestry program and an Arbor Day observance in order to qualify for the designation. The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation.
