In brief: Feds investigating stalling school buses

DETROIT – The federal government is investigating 5,000 school buses from the 2008 model year that could stall without warning.

There have been no accidents or injuries reported. But in at least three cases, high-pressure oil lines that connect the oil pump to the fuel injectors allegedly failed on International CE-brand buses.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration posted a notice about the investigation on its website Sunday.

International CE buses are made by Lisle, Ill.-based Navistar Inc. The company says it will cooperate fully with the investigation.

Possible ‘entry point’ in search for girl

TUCSON, Ariz. – Investigators found “suspicious circumstances around a possible entry point” at the home of a 6-year-old Arizona girl whose disappearance has prompted a massive search, with more than 150 law enforcement officers trying to figure out whether she was abducted, a police spokeswoman said Sunday.

The parents of first-grader Isabel Mercedes Celis have said they last saw her in her bedroom at 11 p.m. Friday, a police spokeswoman said. She was discovered missing at about 8 a.m. Saturday, and the parents phoned 911 minutes later.

Officers kept the whole neighborhood block where Isabel lives cordoned off for a second day and fanned out over a wide area looking for clues to the possible kidnapping.

Two states report explosion, fireball

RENO, Nev. – A loud explosion heard across much of Nevada and California on Sunday morning rattled homes and prompted a flood of calls to law enforcement agencies on both sides of the Sierra Nevada, some reporting fireball sightings.

The sound and the light show were likely caused by a meteor that entered Earth’s atmosphere, astronomers said.

No damages or injuries were immediately reported. There were no reports of earthquakes at the time.
