Life sentences for roommate’s death

Associated Press

ALBANY, Ore. – Three men convicted of murdering a roommate and dumping his body in a sleeping bag in the brush along Interstate 5 have been sentenced to life in prison.

Judge Carol Bispham handed down the mandatory minimum sentences, which include the possibility of parole after 25 years.

Jose Felipe Hernandez-Leiva had been granted asylum in the United States after his role in the civil war in the 1990s in El Salvador.

Investigators say Hernandez-Leiva was beaten to death during an evening of drinking at an apartment in rural Linn County.

The three are 25-year-old Edgar Hernandez-Mendoza, 38-year-old Abiu Antonio Padilla and 30-year-old Jose Juarez-Alvarez.
