Arrested Minnesota Vikings running back Caleb King was arrested in Oak Grove, Minn., on suspicion of third-degree assault in the beating of another man outside a birthday party, the Anoka County sheriff’s office said Saturday. King, who signed with the Vikings as a rookie free agent last year but didn’t play in a game, was jailed but hasn’t been charged. The victim was a 22-year-old. King is accused of punching him repeatedly and throwing him headfirst to the ground. The man was hospitalized in serious condition with skull and facial fractures, as well as with cuts that required more than 50 stitches to close.
Injured Knicks rookie guard Iman Shumpert will miss the rest of the postseason after tearing a left knee ligament in the third quarter of New York’s Game 1 loss to the Miami Heat. The Knicks announced Shumpert also tore his lateral meniscus. Surgery will be scheduled in New York and Shumpert is expected to miss six to eight months.
• Boston Celtics guard Ray Allen is still not sure if he’ll be able to play in the playoff opener against the Atlanta Hawks today. Allen, 36, has not played in two weeks because of a sore right ankle. Allen said that if it weren’t for the playoffs, he’d already be having surgery.
Finished Heisman Trophy winner Bo Jackson’s 300-mile bike ride across Alabama ended in Tuscaloosa, having raised more than $413,000 so far to help victims of last spring’s tornado outbreaks. Hundreds joined Jackson for the ride, including celebrities such as Lance Armstrong, former major leaguer Ken Griffey Jr. and former NBA star Scottie Pippen. Riders could join Jackson for $200 a day. Each of the five bikes Jackson rode will be auctioned.
Released The St. Louis Rams will release kicker Josh Brown. Brown, who turns 33 today, is entering the final year of a five-year, $14.2 million deal. He’s a career 81 percent kicker but was 21 for 28 on field goals last season, with five misses inside the 50 and one inside the 40.
Urged Barcelona captain Carles Puyol says players urged departing coach Pep Guardiola to stay at the club. Guardiola announced Friday that he is leaving the club after winning 13 titles in four seasons. Assistant coach Tito Vilanova will take over at season’s end.
