In brief: Driver in crash faces charge

From staff and wire reports
A Spokane woman faces a vehicular assault charge after the Jeep Cherokee she was driving rolled off the highway near Spangle, the Washington State Patrol reported late Saturday. Leah F. Gurske, 24, was northbound on U.S. Highway 195 about a half mile north of Spangle when the SUV left the road just before 6 p.m. Saturday. She was transported to Deaconess Hospital and was no longer a patient on Sunday afternoon. A passenger in the Jeep, Daniel G. Hill, 28, was taken to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he was listed in satisfactory condition on Sunday afternoon. Use of alcohol was a factor in the crash, the WSP said. Both Gurske and Hill were wearing seat belts.

Reservation fire mostly contained

SEATTLE – A lightning-sparked wildfire on the Yakama Indian Reservation is now 60 percent contained. Interagency fire management teams reported Sunday that the blaze has covered nearly 300 acres since starting on Aug. 19 on the northwest area of the reservation. Favorable weather over the weekend helped crews increase the fire containment from 30 percent to 60 percent.

Large log injures Utah firefighter

BOISE – A member of an elite Utah-based hotshot crew has been hospitalized in Boise after a large log rolled over him while he worked to build a fire line on a central Idaho wildfire. Officials said two other members of the 20-member Bonneville Hotshots based in West Valley City, Utah, received minor injuries in the same incident on Saturday. Trinity Ridge Fire spokesman Michael Williams said the hospitalized firefighter suffered chest, elbow and wrist injuries. It was unclear late Sunday if he had left the hospital. A review of the incident is planned.
