Phillips, Bengals eliminate Trojans
Tisha Phillips scored 17 points and Karlee Wilson added 10 as the defending Idaho 5A champion Lewiston Bengals eliminated Post Falls with a 58-48 win in a 5A Region I tournament game Friday night in Lewiston.
The Trojans (12-10) – 2008 state champions – were led by Dani Failor, who scored 16 points, and Brooke Litalien, who had 10.
The 5A state tournament will be held Thursday through next Saturday at the Idaho Center in Nampa.
Both Lewiston (19-4) and Coeur d’Alene (18-2) are state-bound. The Bengals beat the Vikings 43-39 in last year’s title game.
Idaho 3A District I
Timberlake 42, St. Maries 34: Kara Wenstrom scored 25 points on 11-of-17 shooting as the Tigers (12-10) secured a spot in the state tournament with a win over the Lumberjacks (7-15) in Rathdrum.
Timberlake, which fell to Sugar-Salem in last year’s state title game, will play Salmon on Thursday in Middleton.
Dusti Huddleston tallied a team-high 15 points for St. Maries, which was eliminated.
Washington District 7 1A
Colville 44, Newport 26: Ashley Knight scored 13 points and Tasha Luu added 10 as the Indians (15-6) beat the Grizzlies (16-6) at Mead High School.
With the win, the Indians claimed the district title and the top seed to the subregional tournament, which starts Wednesday at Moses Lake.
Taylor Lewis scored a team-high eight points for Newport, which advances as the Northeast A League’s second seed.
Freeman 47, Lakeside 36: Molly McIntyre had 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Scotties (21-1) beat the Eagles (11-12) at Mead, claiming the Northeast A League’s third and final seed to the subregional tournament.
Tayler Flemming had a team-high 13 points for Lakeside, which was eliminated.
The Eagles will take on the Caribou Trail League’s second seed Wednesday at Moses Lake in a loser-out game.
Washington District 9 1B
Tekoa-Oakesdale 47, Rosalia 45: Cassandra Mendoza’s go-ahead bucket late in the fourth quarter was enough to lift the Nighthawks (15-6) past the host Spartans (17-4).
Rosalia’s putback attempt off a missed free throw was no good as time expired.
Alex Overton had a team-high 11 points for T-O. The Spartans were led by Briann Maley’s 24 points and 12 rebounds.
The Nighthawks will play Colton in the title game Friday in Endicott, with the winner advancing to the regional tournament as the No. 1 seed. Rosalia will play in a loser-out game Tuesday in Endicott.
Colton 66, Garfield-Palouse 9: Jenna Moser and Haley Moser scored 15 points apiece as the Wildcats (21-0) overwhelmed the visiting Vikings (9-10).
Garfield-Palouse was limited to just one field goal and was outscored 25-0 in the second half.
The Vikings will play in a loser-out game Tuesday in Endicott.
Boys
Washington District 7 1A
Freeman 48, Colville 33: Cody Unfred and Mitch Vander Linden scored 17 points apiece as the Scotties secured the district title at Mead High School.
The Scotties (15-7) sealed the deal in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Indians 11-3. Alex Pond tallied a team-high 10 points for Colville (14-10).
Freeman earned the Northeast A League’s top seed to the subregional tournament, which starts Wednesday in Moses Lake. The Indians are the second seed.
Newport 60, Chewelah 52: Jake Wiley made all eight of his free-throw attempts and finished with a game-high 30 points as the Grizzlies (13-10) upset the Cougars (15-7) at Mead and claimed the third and final seed to the subregional tournament.
Brandon Smith scored 16 points and Derek Smith added 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals for Chewelah, which was eliminated.
Nonleague
Lake City 45, Lakeland 29: After a lackluster first half, the Timberwolves (13-7) came out on fire in the third quarter and raced past the Hawks (4-16) in a regular-season finale in Coeur d’Alene.
The Timberwolves will open postseason play Friday with a 5A Region I game against Post Falls (17-2) in Coeur d’Alene. Lakeland hosts Sandpoint (7-13) on Tuesday in a 4A Region I game.
Coeur d’Alene Charter 78, Clark Fork 36: Bryan Smith scored 18 points and John Simon added 14 as the Panthers (11-7) routed the host Wampus Cats (1-9).
Coeur d’Alene Charter made nine 3-pointers and led by 32 at halftime. Clark Fork got nine points apiece from Stillman Berkley and Zach Nesbitt.
Wallace 52, Lakeside 41: Andrew Brackebusch led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Miners (8-9) pulled away late and beat the visiting Knights (10-6).
Casey McKinnon added 12 points for Wallace, which outscored Lakeside 19-9 in the final quarter. The Knights were led by Jordan Brown’s 14 points.
