Today is deadline to vote on school levies

This is the last day to cast ballots in school levy elections.

All but three school districts in Spokane County are asking for voters to approve maintenance and operation levies. Some also are seeking technology levies.

More than 100,000 ballots already have been returned, according to the Spokane County Elections Office.

If returning your ballot by mail, it must be postmarked by today in order to be counted.

Ballots also can be dropped off until 8 p.m. at official drop boxes located at all public libraries countywide, or at the county Elections Office, 1033 W. Gardner Ave.

City outlaws dumping snow into public streets

The next time it snows, think twice before tossing snow from a driveway into the street.

The Spokane City Council on Monday voted 5-1 to outlaw the dumping of snow into public streets or other public property with the exception of planting strips or snow berms created by city plows. Private plow companies caught breaking the law could face a $513 fine. Businesses could be fined $257 and homeowners $52.

Street officials say the law was needed because some plow companies have disregarded requests to stop moving snow into the street.
