McGruder’s 24 helps K-State upset Missouri

COLLEGE MEN: Rodney McGruder scored 24 points and visiting Kansas State upset No. 3 Missouri 78-68 Tuesday night at Columbia, Mo., the Wildcats’ second win this basketball season over the Tigers.

Kansas State (19-8, 8-7 Big 12) led 40-30 at halftime and by 16 points in the second half before a late run by Missouri (25-3, 12-3) got the Tigers within 63-60.

Missouri trailed by four after two free throws by Michael Dixon with 2:21 left, but Jordan Henriquez answered with an alley-oop dunk.

• Seton Hall defeats No. 9 Georgetown: Jordan Theodore scored a career-high 29 points to lead host Seton Hall to the signature win it needed for its NCAA tournament résumé, a 73-55 victory over No. 9 Georgetown at Newark, N.J.

The Pirates (19-9, 8-8 Big East) put on quite a shooting performance against one of the conference’s best defensive teams. They shot 61.0 percent (25 for 41), the best against the Hoyas this season.

• Colorado State cools off Lobos: Pierce Hornung scored 13 points, grabbed 15 rebounds and shut down Drew Gordon in leading host Colorado State to a 71-63 upset of No. 18 New Mexico at Fort Collins, Colo. Hornung also had four steals as the Rams (17-9, 6-5 Mountain West) extended their winning streak to 12 straight at Moby Arena. The Lobos (22-5, 8-3) lost for the first time since Jan. 21.

• Tar Heels down Wolfpack: Kendall Marshall had a career-high 22 points and 13 assists to help No. 7 North Carolina beat host North Carolina State 86-74 at Raleigh, N.C. North Carolina has won 12 straight meetings.

• Michigan holds off Northwestern: Trey Burke, Zack Novak and Stu Douglass hit 3-pointers to start overtime and No. 11 Michigan beat host Northwestern 67-55 at Evanston, Ill., for its fourth straight victory.

Burke scored 19 to lead the Wolverines (21-7, 11-4 Big Ten), who made 14 3-pointers.

• Virginia defense keys win: Mike Scott scored 20 points and Sammy Zeglinski had 13, all in the second half, and No. 25 Virginia hung on to beat host Virginia Tech 61-59 at Blacksburg, Va.

For the second game in a row, the Cavaliers (21-6, 8-5 Atlantic Coast Conference) held an opponent scoreless for more than eight minutes in the second half to rally.

Blazers win easily as Spurs rest stars

NBA: LaMarcus Aldridge had 21 points and the Portland Trail Blazers routed visiting San Antonio 137-97 while the Spurs rested Tim Duncan and Tony Parker.

Jamal Crawford scored 20 points, shooting 5 for 7 on 3-pointers, and had eight assists for the Blazers, who led by as many as 48 points and sat all of their starters for most of the fourth quarter. Gerald Wallace and Nicolas Batum each had 19 points.

The loss snapped San Antonio’s 11-game win streak.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said before the game that he was resting Parker and Duncan because the Spurs were playing three games in four nights.

• Wade leads Heat: Dwyane Wade scored 30 points and added 10 assists, Mario Chalmers and Chris Bosh each scored 20 points and the NBA-leading Miami Heat stretched their winning streak to seven games with a 120-108 win over the visiting Sacramento Kings.

• Irving rallies Cavs: Antawn Jamison scored 32 points and rookie Kyrie Irving led Cleveland’s comeback from a 17-point deficit with 17 points in the fourth quarter, leading the Cavaliers to a 101-100 win over the visiting Detroit Pistons.

Sooners knock off No. 14 Texas A&M

COLLEGE WOMEN: Aaryn Ellenberg scored 23 points and Morgan Hook 19 to lead host Oklahoma to a 64-55 victory against No. 14 Texas A&M at Norman, Okla.

• Syracuse downs No. 21 DePaul: Rachel Coffey and Carmen Tyson-Thomas scored 22 points apiece to lead visiting Syracuse to an 81-65 victory over No. 21 DePaul at Chicago.

Stamkos’ two goals power Tampa Bay

NHL: Steven Stamkos scored his league-leading 41st and 42nd goals and added an assist as the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 at Tampa, Fla.

• Injuries hit standouts: Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier is out indefinitely because of broken right hand. Lecavalier has 21 goals. … Detroit Red Wings leading scorer Pavel Datsyuk is expected to miss two weeks after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.

• Fleury shuts out Rangers: Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 27 shots to tie Tom Barrasso’s franchise record for 22 career shutouts and carry the Pittsburgh Penguins past the visiting New York Rangers 2-0.
