Heat turn back Knicks, Lin

NBA: Jeremy Lin was no match for the Miami Heat.

Forcing Lin into easily the worst game of his remarkable run as New York’s starting point guard by running streams of defenders at him, Miami topped the visiting Knicks 102-88 on Thursday night – the eighth straight win for the NBA-leading Heat, all of those wins coming by at least 12 points.

Chris Bosh scored 25 points, Dwyane Wade added 22 and LeBron James finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and eight assists for Miami, which will go into the All-Star break tied for the NBA’s best record (27-7).

Lin’s final line: 1 for 11 from the field, eight points, three assists.

Thunder thump Lakers: Kevin Durant scored 33 points, Russell Westbrook added 19 and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the visiting Los Angeles Lakers 100-85 to head into the All-Star break tied for the league’s best record (27-7).

Dawkins, Rivers lead Duke past Florida St.

College men’s basketball: Reserve Andre Dawkins scored 22 points and freshman Austin Rivers added 20 to lead No. 5 Duke to a 74-66 victory over No. 15 Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla.

The win keeps the Blue Devils tied with No. 7 North Carolina for first place in the Atlantic Coast Conference while Florida State dropped a game behind.

Iowa sweeps Wisconsin: Senior Matt Gatens scored a career-high 33 points and Iowa beat No. 16 Wisconsin 67-66 at Iowa City, Iowa, for its second straight win over a ranked opponent.

It was the second straight career-high for Gatens, who had 30 points in Iowa’s win over then-No. 18 Indiana on Sunday. The Hawkeyes swept the Badgers in the regular season for the first time since 1994-95.

Cincinnati knocks off Louisville: Cashmere Wright scored 22 points and matched his career-high with six 3-pointers as host Cincinnati beat No. 17 Louisville 60-56.

The Cardinals shot 1 of 14 behind the arc. Leading scorer Kyle Kuric missed all of his 11 shots from the field.

Duerson’s family sues league over death

NFL: The family of former Chicago Bears player Dave Duerson filed a wrongful death suit against the NFL, claiming the league didn’t do enough to prevent or treat the concussions that severely damaged his brain before he killed himself.

The suit was filed in Chicago on behalf of Duerson’s son, Tregg, and three other children. Duerson died on Feb. 17, 2011, of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest at his home.

Packers, Finley reach deal: Jermichael Finley is remaining with the Packers, signing a two-year contract with Green Bay. The big-play tight end was set to become a free agent before re-signing.

Roethlisberger restructures contract: Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is restructuring his contract to help the team get under the 2012 salary cap by March 13.

Eagles sign Edwards: Quarterback Trent Edwards and the Philadelphia Eagles agreed on a one-year contract. Edwards hasn’t played in the NFL since 2010.

Canucks end Wings’ home winning streak

NHL: Daniel Sedin scored his second goal of the game with 15.4 seconds left in regulation and Alex Burrows had the only score in a shootout, lifting the Vancouver Canucks to a 4-3 victory that snapped the Detroit Red Wings’ NHL-record 23-game home winning streak.

Detroit hadn’t lost at Joe Louis Arena since Nov. 3.

Toews unhurt in car accident: Chicago Blackhawks center Jonathan Toews was involved in an automobile accident on the way to the United Center.

According to Chicago police, the Blackhawks captain struck the support pillar of Chicago Transit Authority elevated rail line as he made a turn.

Blue Jackets ship Carter to Kings: The Columbus Blue Jackets traded center Jeff Carter to the Los Angeles Kings for defenseman Jack Johnson and a first-round draft pick in either 2012 or 2013.

Red Wings extend Bertuzzi: The Red Wings signed forward Todd Bertuzzi, 37, to a two-year contract worth just more than $4 million.

Watney eliminates Woods in Match Play

Golf: Tiger Woods couldn’t buy a putt and won’t be sticking around at the Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz.

With a chance to send his match against Nick Watney into overtime, Woods missed a 5-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole and failed to get out of the second round for the third straight time at Dove Mountain.

Watney will face Lee Westwood, the former No. 1 player whom he has beaten in each of the last two years.

Claxton leads Mayakoba: Will Claxton shot a 5-under 66 in windy conditions to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Lady Vols lose third home game of year

Miscellany: Lyndsay Harris scored 20 points and hit a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left to help Arkansas beat No. 10 Tennessee 72-71 in overtime, handing the Lady Volunteers a program-record third home loss this season at Knoxville.

Isinbayeva betters pole vault record: Two-time Olympic champion Yelena Isinbayeva broke her indoor pole vault world record at the XL Galan meet in Stockholm. She cleared 16 feet, 51/4 on her second attempt at Globe Arena, topping her mark of 16-43/4.
