Obituary: Mellem, Chester “Chet”


MELLEM, Chester “Chet”

Passed away at home with his loving wife by his side on the morning of January 9th, 2012 after a brief bout with lung cancer.

He was 86 years old, a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all.

He brought joy to his family through his loving personality, positive attitude, helpful nature and strong work ethic.

Chet was a 50 year member of the Lion’s Club of Spokane, serving as President in 1980-81, and 50 year member of Shriners International.

He owned and operated Mellem Automotive for 35 years in Spokane, Washington, and after retirement obtained his real estate license, selling commercial real estate for another 7-8 years.



Chet was born on May 26th, 1925 in Rosewood, Minnesota, son of Carl Mellem and Minnie Holson, and moved west to Spokane, Washington in 1944 to pursue building his automotive business.

He married Iris Neubauer in 1946, who preceded him in death in 1997.

During their marriage they had two children, continued to build his business and enjoyed their time together at Priest Lake.

In 1999 Chet moved to Redwood City, California and married life long family friend, Jean Avery, in 2000.

There he enjoyed retirement with family and friends, spending part of his time in Palm Springs with his wife, Jean.



Chet is survived by his wife Jean Avery, son Randy Mellem, daughter Linda Jones, son-in-Law Eric Jones, and grandchildren Beau Mellem, Zachary Logan, and Michelle Mellem.

Additionally, he is survived by stepchildren and grandchildren Wendy Avery Enriquez, Frank Enriquez, Scott Avery, Timothy Avery, Jeff Avery, Lara Avery and Kathryn Enriquez.

A private family memorial is planned in February.
