Cougars tab McAlpine as soccer coach

Colleges: Keidane McAlpine has been named the Washington State women’s soccer coach, director of athletics Bill Moos announced on Friday.

McAlpine, who was an assistant the past six seasons at Auburn, becomes the fifth coach in program history.

The Cougars advanced to the NCAA Championships in three of the last four seasons, including second-round appearances in 2009 and 2011.

A 1997 graduate of Birmingham-Southern, McAlpine played four seasons for the Panthers, including 1996 when he was the captain of the NAIA national runners-up.

Considered one of the top tacticians in collegiate coaching, McAlpine worked with every area of the offense and defense during his tenure at Auburn and the Tigers won three Southeastern Conference Western Division crowns.

Three locals in all-star game

Football: University of Idaho players Korey Toomer and Tyrone Novikoff have been selected to play in the Players All-Star Classic Feb. 4 in Little Rock, Ark.

Novikoff, a senior from Curlew, was a Vandals team captain during his senior season. He started 25 consecutive games at offensive tackle.

Toomer, a linebacker who was voted Vandals MVP in 2011, had 68 total tackles. He also played fullback and scored three touchdowns.

Eastern Washington defensive lineman Renard Williams is also on the North roster.
