MARKHAM, Janet H.
(Age 100)
Janet Markham passed away on January 26, 2012.
Janet was born November 15, 1911 in Troy, Idaho to Earl W. Newman and Mary Helen Strong.
She lived in Spokane for over 50 years and was an active and involved member of a number of local organizations.
Janet was a volunteer for St. Luke’s and Meals on Wheels as well as the American Red Cross.
She was also involved with the Spokane Club and Manito Golf & Country Club.
Janet taught English and was a world traveler and socialite.
Most notably, Janet and her second husband, Lorin, founded Cancer Patient Care in 1958.
They began raising money through a small thrift store called “Penny Stretcher”, located on Boone Avenue and later moved to Trent Avenue.
The Markhams felt there was an urgent need to establish a local support agency and Cancer Patient Care has been described as the primary organization to which regional cancer care centers refer patients.
Cancer Patient Care serves patients in 13 counties located throughout Eastern Washington and North Idaho.
Janet was preceded in death by her first husband Roy Huse in 1957 and second husband Lorin W Markham in 2003 as well as her parents and sister Elizabeth McGhee.
Janet is survived by her step daughter Ann Elizabeth Barnecut; step grandchildren James and Sandra and nephew David Wallace McGhee and niece Mary Lynn McGhee.
Memorial contributions may be made to Cancer Patient Care, Hospice of Spokane, or VNA (Visiting Nurses Association).
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
