Suspended Major League Soccer’s disciplinary committee on Thursday suspended midfielder David Beckham for one game for kicking a ball at an opponent late in the Los Angeles Galaxy’s loss at San Jose.

Included San Antonio Spurs guard Tony Parker was included on the 12-man roster for France’s Olympic basketball team despite the uncertainty of a left eye injury that could keep him sidelined.

Re-signed The Washington Capitals re-signed restricted free-agent centers Mathieu Perreault and Jay Beagle.

Denied The NCAA denied former Auburn running back Michael Dyer’s request to be immediately eligible to play this season at Arkansas State.

Announced Olympic gold medalists Clay Stanley and Reid Priddy were among the players chosen for the U.S. men’s volleyball roster for the London Games. The roster announced by coach Alan Knipe was submitted to the U.S. Olympic Committee. • Guard Rodney Hood is transferring from Mississippi State to Duke. Coach Mike Krzyzewski said that Hood will sit out this season, will have three seasons of eligibility remaining beginning in 2013-14 and “will have a huge positive impact on our program.” Hood is a left-handed wing who stands 6-foot-8.

• Former No. 1 player Lorena Ochoa is making a limited return to golf and will play in October at the French Open on the Ladies European Tour. The 30-year-old retired in 2010 and gave birth to a son in December 2011.

Enrolled Former Georgia running back Isaiah Crowell enrolled at Alabama State and is expected to play for the Hornets this season. Georgia coach Mark Richt dismissed Crowell last Friday after the sophomore was arrested on felony weapons charges.

Died Heavyweight boxer from the 1940s and 1950s, Jimmy Bivins, who defeated some of the greatest fighters of his time – including Archie Moore and Ezzard Charles – has died. He was 92. Bivins died of complications from pneumonia early Wednesday at an East Cleveland nursing home.
