In brief: Backpacks for Kids drive under way

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Salvation Army of Spokane has delivered donation bins to local businesses for its annual Backpacks for Kids program.

Beginning Monday, residents can donate school supplies to help kids in need head back to school with the tools to succeed.

Bins are located at Fred Meyer stores, Rite Aid stores, Shopko stores, Safeway, Spokane Credit Union, PrimeSource Credit Union, Dishman Dodge Chrysler Sales and Service, Spokane County Public Safety Building, Old Navy, and Spokane Fire Department in downtown Spokane.

The bins will be outside the businesses until Aug. 24.

The Salvation Army will need volunteers to sort donations, load the backpacks, do intake and hand out supplies to kids. Sorting shifts will be Aug. 13-22, from noon to 5 p.m. Backpacks will be distributed Aug. 23, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., at the Salvation Army, 222 E. Indiana Ave.

Fundraiser will help SpokAnimal

CHIEF GARRY PARK – The 16th annual Helter Shelter supply drive and adoption event to benefit SpokAnimal will be Saturday at the Dorothy Clark Animal Center, 710 N. Napa St., from noon to 2 p.m.

The fundraiser will feature a dog kissing booth, give-aways and snow cones.

Donations of pet food, dog biscuits, cat litter, blankets, pet toys, cleaning supplies and cash will be accepted at the ASPCA Subaru and 98.9 KKZX will be broadcasting live. There will also be vaccination and microchip clinics.

County panels seek to fill vacancies

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane County commissioners are seeking to fill a series of vacancies on county boards and commissions.

The openings are for the Civil Service Commission, Spokane County Shooting Advisory Committee, Developmental Disabilities Board, and Emergency Services Communications Policy Board.

Also, the Housing and Community Development Advisory Committee, Substance Abuse Advisory Board, and Solid Waste Advisory Committee.

COPS shop offers free dump passes

NORTHWEST – The Northwest Neighborhood Association will have 65 free dump passes available for residents of the neighborhood on Saturday at the COPS Northwest Shop, 2215 W. Wellesley Ave., Suite D, beginning at 9 a.m.

The Northwest neighborhood covers the area west of Ash Street to the Spokane River, bound by Belt Street and Indiana Avenue, on the south, Francis Avenue on the north to Fairview Avenue, including Westgate and Northwest Terrace.

A driver’s license or a utility bill is required to verify residence in the northwest neighborhood. Dump passes will be issued on a first-come, first-served basis. Passes are good for about two weeks after they are issued.
