In brief: 2-year-old hurt in hit-and-run
A 2-year-old girl remains in serious condition in a Spokane hospital after a suspected drunken driver ran over a bicycle carrier she was riding in Saturday.
Timmy N. Nguyen, 22, of Spokane, was arrested on charges of felony hit-and-run and vehicular assault, Spokane County sheriff’s Detective Dave Thornburg said in a news release.
The incident occurred at 7:53 p.m. near Maringo Drive west of Argonne Road. The child was in a bicycle trailer and was wearing a helmet when a 2003 Honda Element came around the corner off Argonne at high speed, authorities said.
The car crossed over onto the wrong side of the road and ran the trailer over, officials said.
A witness followed the car, which did not stop, to an apartment complex in the 4700 block of Pasadena Lane and blocked the vehicle with his own, authorities said. The witness told sheriff’s deputies that the driver, later identified as Nguyen, a Gonzaga law student, appeared intoxicated when the witness confronted him. When asked if he knew what he had done, Nguyen replied with profanity, the witness said.
The child sustained skull and wrist fractures but is expected to recover, Thornburg said.
Northeast counties hit hard by storm
Residents in several northeast Washington counties remained without power Sunday, and officials in Ferry County and the Colville Tribe have declared a state of emergency due to damage caused by severe thunderstorms Friday.
Crews with the state Emergency Operations Center were sent to help with damage assessment to provide an estimate of the damage sustained to homes, buildings, roads and bridges as a result of the storm, said Mark Clemens with the EOC. Emergency crews in Stevens County provided search and rescue radios for communication to Ferry County, and refrigerated trucks for food storage and portable showers for the town of Keller on the Colville Reservation.
