Handgun incident under investigation

Arrests for driving with a suspended license continued to top the activity list in Liberty Lake the week of May 21. There were nine arrests for the infraction, plus one arrest on a charge of driving under the influence and one arrest for both offenses.

Police were called to the 300 block of South Legend Tree Lane just before 10 a.m. May 22 when a construction worker reported that he was arguing with a homeowner, who had displayed a handgun several times, said Police Chief Brian Asmus. The gun was reportedly under the man’s shirt, which he lifted to display the weapon. The man was wearing a gun when officers arrived, Asmus said, and had a concealed pistol license. The prosecutor’s office is reviewing the case to see if charges should be filed, Asmus said.

An officer on patrol at 3:30 a.m. on May 24 noticed that several RVs at Freedom RV had been broken into and were missing their batteries, Asmus said. A woman called police at 9:30 p.m. on May 24 to report that two teenagers had tried to sell her 12-year-old daughter marijuana in Pavillion Park. Police tracked down the car involved and the driver denied trying to sell drugs, Asmus said. He was banned from returning to the park.

A citizen helped recover some stolen property when he called police at 5:30 a.m. on May 26 to report that he was following a suspicious vehicle in the area of Trent Avenue and Starr Road. The car was towing a trailer with two personal watercraft. Two people in the car reportedly unloaded the trailer on the side of the road and drove off quickly, Asmus said, but the citizen continued to follow them.

Liberty Lake officers stopped the car and discovered the driver was wanted on three warrants. The passenger reportedly had drug paraphernalia in his pocket, Asmus said. The watercraft had been reported stolen from Post Falls earlier that morning. The case was turned over to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

A large underage drinking party was reported in the 23000 block of East Sinto Lane at 12:45 a.m. on May 27. When officers arrived they saw several cars parked in the road near the residence, but no one answered the door, Asmus said. Several of the cars were ticketed for parking violations and one car was towed because it was blocking the road, he said.
