Long-time Creston
resident Gertrude “Lorene” Brown passed away on June 1, 2012 at the Cheney Care Center in Cheney Washington.

She was 93.

Lorene was born to Fred and Mae Mangis at their farm east of Creston on July 5, 1918.

She attended school in Creston and graduated with the class of 1937.

On August 31, 1939 she married Tony Brown, Jr. and began her married life at their home on Main Street in Creston which would be her home for the next 71 years.

Lorene spent much of her life as a homemaker.

She loved Creston and was a member of most of the women’s organizations in Creston and Lincoln for a time.

She was a lifetime member of the Creston Christian Church.

Her community activities were the Christian Women’s Fellowship, Civic Club, and for eight years a Cub Scout den mother.

Her hobbies included: scrap booking, cooking, gardening and card playing —-Pinochle & Rummy.

She particularly enjoyed many hours maintaining her yard and flowers.

She never lost her farm girl roots.

She greeted people with her broad smile and gentle nature.

In the early 60s she began an 18 year period as a waitress at various places in Creston, Davenport and Wilbur.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mae Mangis, husband Tony Brown, Jr., son Larry Brown, granddaughters Adair Brown and Wanda Brown, brothers Jerry Mangis and Jess Mangis, sisters, Doris Douglas and Ethel Sterett.
Survivors include daughter Beverley Vaughan of Creston, son Darrel Brown of Creston; granddaughter Wendy Olson of Chewelah; grandson Chris Brown and wife Colleen of Northglenn, Colorado; great-grandson Josh Brown of Chateau, Montana; great-grandson Tony Brown of Spokane and great-granddaughter Brittany Silver and husband Shawn of Deer Park, WA; great-great-granddaughters Paige Brown and Zoey Silver and great-great-grandson Cole Brown; brother Gale Mangis of Grandledge, MI and numerous nieces and nephews.
Interment services will be held at the Creston Cemetery on June 9, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. with Memorial service following at the Creston Christian Church at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Guy Schmielau officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Creston Christian Church or the Creston Alumni Association.
