Firefighters discover fire while returning from river rescue
A Spokane Fire Department crew stumbled upon and extinguished a fire at 4101 E Fredrick Ave. Wednesday night.
Engine 2 from the Logan Neighborhood arrived first on the scene just before 7 p.m. when the crew members stopped to check out a smoky odor they noticed nearby. The firefighters were on their way back from rescuing someone in the Spokane River.
The crew found a bedroom on fire on the back side of the residence and evacuated the person inside the home before calling for more firefighters.
Six fire companies and 20 firefighters showed up to put out the fire. They contained the flames to one room and determined that the cause of the fire was smoking related.
They reported no injuries but the structure damage amounts to about $10,000.
