Huskies’ Williams wins golf tourney
Moscow High School standout Chris Williams breezed to medalist honors and helped the Washington Huskies men tie Long Beach State for first place at the Bandon Dunes Championship in Bandon, Ore., on Sunday.
Williams closed out the three-round tourney with a course-record 5-under-par 66 to finish at 9-under 204, six shots better than runner-up Kevin Lim of Long Beach State.
The Huskies, who entered the day with a seven-shot lead over Long Beach State, tied the 49ers with 5-over 857 totals.
Williams set a school record with his fifth career victory. He passed Brock Mackenzie and Nick Taylor, who each had four wins.
“It feels awesome,” said Williams. “Playing after guys like Brock and Nick and walking in their footswteps is tremendous. I haven’t been playing that great lately, but to be able to get the win … it feels so good.”
Gonzaga’s men finished 14th in the 15-team event. Travis Johnsen led the Bulldogs with a 227 total, tying him for 46th place.
• The Washington State Cougars men lost a pair of 3-and-2 matches during the first day of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship in Bradenton, Fla.
WSU, the 16th seed, lost to top-seeded Arkansas in the opener and then fell to No. 8 Iowa.
• The Eastern Washington women placed 15th in the 18-team Bison Challenge in Las Vegas.
The tourney was canceled after two rounds because of high winds.
Oral Roberts won the team title.
EWU was paced by Jayme Carbon who tied for 47th.
Baseball
Mike Hager allowed one run in eight innings and set down 17 of the first 19 Gonzaga batters he faced to lead the visiting Pacific Tigers (4-15) to a 4-2 nonconference victory over the Bulldogs (12-6).
GU didn’t score until Marco Gonzales, who had three hits on the day, led off the bottom of the seventh with his first home run of the season.
John Prato-Matthews allowed a ninth-inning run in picking up his second save for Pacific.
• C.J. Perry (2-1) tossed five shutout innings and Landon Scott and Tyler Pfeffer each hit two-run home runs to spark the Whitworth Pirates (11-6-1, 5-1) to a 7-1 victory over the visiting Pacific Lutheran Lutes (11-7, 6-3) in Northwest Conference play.
Perry allowed seven hits and a walk. Dan Scheibe allowed one run on four hits with five strikeouts over the final four innings to earn his first save of the season.
Scott staked the Pirates to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with his second four-bagger of the season. Pfeffer’s fourth homer came in the fifth and put the Pirates up 5-0. Gerhard Muelheims added two hits and two RBIs for the Whits.
• The Community Colleges of Spokane Sasquatch split a NWAACC doubleheader with Okanagan, losing the opener 9-4 before bouncing back to win the nightcap 14-1.
Softball
The Whitworth Pirates (8-14, 6-10) completed a four-game sweep of the visiting Puget Sound Loggers (2-18, 2-12) by taking both ends of a doubleheader 10-9, 7-2.
The Pirates scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, three coming on a game-tying home run from Jessica Ross, to rally for a one-run win in the opener. Pinch-hitter Ashlyn Mundo reached on a two-base error and scored the winning run on another error.
In the nightcap, Riley Fritz (4-9) went the distance and allowed two runs on six hits to pick up her second win of the day. She won the opener in relief. Jamie Brunner hit her first home run of the season, a three-run shot, and added a run-scoring single to power the Whits’ offense.
• Nicole Atkinson homered three times and drove in eight runs to propel the North Idaho Cardinals to a 10-2, 9-1 doubleheader sweep over the visiting Big Bend Vikings in nonconference play.
Atkinson and Shelby Carter each drove in three runs in the opener. Jenifer Rosie (5-5) fanned 12 in five innings to pick up the win.
In the second game, Atkinson drove in five runs and Rosie notched the victory with three innings of shutout relief. Both games went five innings.
