Returned Ex- manager Joe Torre returned to the job of MLB’s executive vice president for baseball operations less than three months after he resigned the post to join a group trying to buy the Dodgers. Torre became a top aide to Commissioner Bud Selig in February 2011. He resigned Jan. 4 to be part of a group headed by real estate developer Rick Caruso.

Planned Federal prosecutors in the Roger Clemens perjury trial in Washington plan to have pitcher Andy Pettitte testify about his own use of human growth hormone. The government says Pettitte will testify about using human growth hormone with the assistance of Brian McNamee, Clemens’ longtime trainer.

Sidelined Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria will undergo reconstructive elbow surgery and will miss the 2012 season. The surgery is scheduled for April 3. Soria made the decision after being examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., for a third opinion.

• Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter has nerve irritation that has caused weakness in his pitching shoulder and the St. Louis ace will be sidelined indefinitely. • Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain dislocated his right ankle while playing with his son on a trampoline in Tampa, Fla. There is no timetable for Chamberlain’s return. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said Friday that Chamberlain had surgery and would be hospitalized a few days.

Arrested Matthew Brian Bush, 26, a minor league pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, faces multiple charges after leaving the scene of an accident that seriously injured a 72-year-old man on a motorcycle in Port Charlotte, Fla., the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Fired Duquesne fired men’s basketball coach Ron Everhart after six seasons with the Dukes, a 99-89 record and three postseason appearances. But questions began to surface this week, when three members of the team announced intentions to transfer.

Hired Nebraska hired Colorado State’s Tim Miles as its new men’s basketball coach. The 45-year-old Miles coached the Rams to a 20-12 record and their first NCAA tournament appearance since 2003.

Died The grandson of the inventor of basketball, James Naismith, Ian Naismith, who ran a foundation in the family name dedicated to promoting youth sports, died of a heart attack Tuesday at the age of 72. • Marje Everett, a legendary and controversial figure in the sport of horse racing for more than four decades and the chief executive of the Hollywood Park racetrack for six years, died Friday in Los Angeles. She was 90.
