In brief: Mead’s Rogers shines on big stage
Wrestling: Team USA, led by Mead’s Jordan Rogers, defeated Team Pennsylvania 34-9 over the weekend at the 38th Dapper Dan wrestling meet.
Rogers, wrestling at 182 pounds, defeated Penn State-bound Wesley Phipps of Grove City, Pa. Rogers built a healthy 10-4 lead over Phipps before finally pinning Phipps at 4:44.
Rogers, who will wrestle at Oklahoma State starting in the fall, earned the Outstanding Wrestler award.
St. Luke’s wins basketball title
Adaptive sports: Team St. Luke’s, the adaptive sports and recreation program for people with physical disabilities, is national champions, winning the Junior Division at the 2012 National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. This is the first national wheelchair championship win in Team St. Luke’s history.
Team St. Luke’s defeated Grand Rapids to bring home the championship crown. Team St. Luke’s was led in scoring by Will Robbins (18 points) and Josh Brewer (15 points).
Other team members: Kyle Bocook, Kelsie Christensen, Chelsea McClammer, Isaiah Rigo, Mikila Salazar and Amberlynn Weber.
Robbins was named tournament MVP, Brewer all-tournament male and McClammer all-tournament female.
Ex-Indians GM Schiller dies
Baseball: Former Spokane Indians general manager Elten Schiller, who helped guide the Indians to the 1970 Pacific Coast League Championship, passed away at his San Diego home on March 10. He was 88.
In Schiller’s five seasons in Spokane (1967-1971) the Indians won three division titles and the 1970 league championship. After the Dodgers moved their Triple-A affiliate to Albuquerque, N.M. following the 1971 season, Schiller worked in the San Diego Padres front office until 1988.
