In brief: Tea fundraiser for nonprofit restaurant

RIVERSIDE – The Women and Children’s Free Restaurant will have its annual Spring Tea on May 12 at the Spokane Masonic Center, 1108 W. Riverside Ave., at 11:30 a.m. The fundraiser is held each year to support the organization in feeding women and children in Spokane.

Tickets are $40 and may be purchased by calling Karen Orlando at (509) 324-1995, ext. 300 or by emailing volunteer@wcfrspokane.org.

Celebrate Crosby’s birthday at the Bing

RIVERSIDE – Advocates for the Bing Crosby Theater, 901 W. Sprague Ave., will have a party at 6 tonight to celebrate the entertainer’s 109th birthday.

At 7 p.m., Crosby’s 1951 film “Here Comes the Groom” will show.

The film, directed by Frank Capra (“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” “It’s a Wonderful Life”), stars Crosby as a newspaper reporter who must win back his former fiancée or lose custody of the two orphans he has adopted.

The gathering will include cake, coffee and punch, plus a talk by Carol Capra, Frank Capra’s daughter-in-law.

Gardening items sale to benefit children

NEVADA/LIDGERWOOD – Spokane Boys Inc., 1003 E. Francis Ave., will have a benefit sale on Saturday for the five children of Chanin Starbuck, who was killed in December.

Fifteen percent of all proceeds of sales from landscape supplies, nursery and gardening items and gift cards will benefit the Starbuck children. Also at Spokane Boys on Saturday, Basin Sod and Garden Springs are donating proceeds from the sale of sod and hanging baskets, respectively.

Residents can also donate to the “Starbuck Kids” bank account at any Bank of America.

Homeless ministry offering training

RIVERSIDE – Cup of Cool Water will have a two-day training for community members who would like to volunteer with Spokane’s homeless youth or those who would like to learn more about street culture and street ministry.

The training will be May 12, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and May 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendance is required both days. Cost is $20 per person or $30 per couple. Lunch will be provided both days.

The training will be downtown at 1106 W. Second Ave.

According to the group’s website, Cup of Cool Water was founded in 1995 with the mission to empower youth who are homeless to become followers of Jesus Christ and to exit street life.

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Digital Bookmobile National Tour, www.digitalbook mobile.com, will feature the free eBook download service from Spokane County Library District at the North Spokane Library, 44 E. Hawthorne Road, on Monday and Tuesday, from noon to 6 p.m., each day.

The event is free and open to the public.
