In brief: Children find human remains

From Staff And Wire Reports

Spokane police were investigating Sunday evening after decomposing human remains were discovered near West 14th Avenue and South Milton Street.

Children playing nearby found the body in a wooded area about 4:40 p.m., according to police. The location is south of Interstate 90 and west of U.S. 195.

Police hadn’t identified the gender of the body as of Sunday evening, according to a news release, and major crimes detectives and a forensics unit were on scene.

Responders work to retrieve body

Emergency personnel were preparing to retrieve a body from the swift-flowing Spokane River this afternoon.

A pedestrian spotted the body at People’s Park around 2:30 p.m. It was tangled in the underbrush near the bank and appeared to have been in the river for a while, said Joe Fielder, Spokane Fire Department battalion chief. Blue jeans and what appeared to be a T-shirt were spotted near the body.

The fire department’s swift-water rescue was training nearby when the call came in, Fielder said. The Spokane County Sheriff’s Department dive team was also at the scene.

Kimberly-Clark selling Everett site

EVERETT – Kimberly-Clark is selling its 66-acre property in Everett after the company closed its pulp-paper mill last month.

The Herald reports the Port of Everett is considering buying the waterfront property.

Company spokesman Bob Brand said multiple potential buyers have expressed interest.

The property has access to a deep-water channel on Puget Sound, a wharf, a railroad, truck access and a huge, dedicated water supply pipeline. But there’s concern over years of industrial use, even though the state is requiring the company to clean it up.

State Department of Ecology’s Seth Preston said there’s no immediate risk from the site.
