In brief: Crews contain Beacon Hill fire

A fire on Beacon Hill was contained within about an hour Friday afternoon.

Flames were reported about 4:44 p.m. on the east side of the hill, which is located near East Euclid Avenue and North Havana Street in Spokane.

A plume of smoke was visible for miles.

The fire was contained by about 6 p.m., dispatchers said.

Crews from the Spokane Fire Department and Spokane County Fire District 9 extinguished the blaze. The cause was not immediately known Friday.

Holiday will affect offices, services

The following offices and services will be affected by the Memorial Day holiday on Monday:

• City, county, state and federal offices will be closed.

• Post offices will be closed.

• Most banks will be closed.

• STA buses operate on the holiday schedule, which is the same as the Sunday schedule.

• Parking meters don’t have to be plugged.

• Most garbage collection will be one day late all week, but call your provider to be sure.

Arrest made in Gregoire threats

EVERETT— The Washington State Patrol has arrested a 38-year-old Everett man accused of threatening to kill Gov. Chris Gregoire.

Trooper Mark Francis said Eric W. Moody was arrested Friday. The man was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of threats to the governor. The trooper said the threats were sent via the governor’s Web page. Francis said late Friday he had no details on the nature or number of the threats or when they began.
