Obituary: Schmidt, Fern Bernice (Mclain)


SCHMIDT, Fern Bernice (McLain)

Passed away May 24, 2012 at the age of 94.

Fern had been a lifetime resident of Washington state.

She graduated in 1935 from North Central High School where she was a distinguished member of the rifle club.

When she completed high school the Dorian Photo Studio employed her as a photo retoucher and she held that job for twenty years.

In 1939 she married Clarence Schmidt.

The two of them bred and raised Arabian and Appaloosa horses at Sunny Brook Stock Ranch in Deer Park Washington.

Fern was a founding member of the National Appaloosa Horse Club and was a past national director of the same.

She was predeceased by her husband; brother Neil McLean; parents Mae Del and Joseph W. McLain; and niece Eleanor Zinger.

Fern is survived by nephews; Bruce McLain of Colville Washington, Gregory J. McLain of Spokane Washington, Ray Schmidt of Kalispell Montana, Richard Schmidt of Port Hadlock, Washington; niece Judith Gardner of Cle Elum Washington; and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews.

Per her request no memorial service will be held.

Her cremated remains will be inurned in a niche beside those of her husband at the St. Joseph Cemetery in the Spokane Valley.
