Signed Free-agent outfielder Torii Hunter has agreed to a $26 million, two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers. Hunter, 37, hit a career-best .313 last season for the Los Angeles Angels with 16 home runs and 92 RBIs.
• Five-time Olympic medalist Missy Franklin has signed a national letter of intent to swim at California next September. The Centennial, Colo., resident plans to swim collegiately for two years and then turn pro before the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Fired The owner and general manager of the Western Hockey League’s Red Deer Rebels, Brent Sutter, is back behind the bench. Sutter fired coach Jesse Wallin on Tuesday and took over on an interim basis. The Rebels are 10-11-1-1.
Released Skier Lindsey Vonn has been released from a hospital in Vail, Colo., on Wednesday, two days after being admitted for intestinal pain. Vonn’s publicist said in an email that she’s “feeling much better and resting comfortably at home.” It is not known when the four-time overall World Cup champion will return to skiing. Vonn hasn’t trained in more than two weeks.
Missing Texas A&M police say freshman wide receiver Thomas Johnson is missing. The department says that the 18-year-old was last seen leaving his residence in College Station on Monday at 5 p.m. Johnson has appeared in 10 games this season, and has 30 catches for 339 yards.
Appealed UCLA has filed an appeal with the NCAA regarding freshman basketball player Shabazz Muhammad being ruled ineligible. The NCAA said Muhammad was ineligible to play basketball after violating amateurism rules.
Reprimanded The Big 12 says it will issue Texas Tech coach Tommy Tuberville a public reprimand for his sideline outburst at a graduate assistant during last weekend’s double overtime win against Kansas.
Fined D.C. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid and forward Lionard Pajoy were fined by MLS on Wednesday for their actions in a playoff game last week against the New York Red Bulls. Both were fined an undisclosed amount.
