In brief: Searchers find body of missing hiker

From Wire Reports

SKYKOMISH, Wash. – Search crews have found the body of a 30-year-old Everett man reported missing while hiking with his brother in the Cascades foothills near Skykomish.

Snohomish County sheriff’s Lt. Steve Dittoe said the brothers had gone hiking Saturday on an unmarked fishermen’s trail that leads to Lake Simms when the two became separated. The man’s brother called police when he failed to turn up later.

The man’s body was spotted Sunday morning by a helicopter crew searching for him. A team plans to recover his body on Monday.

Search and rescue crews were called out Saturday evening. The search resumed again Sunday morning, when his body was found.

Son says author Bach is improving

SEATTLE – Best-selling author Richard Bach remained in serious condition Sunday, recovering from injuries suffered when his small plane clipped power lines and crashed. But his son said he is making marked improvements.

Bach suffered a head injury and broken shoulder after his single-engine amphibian aircraft crashed Friday west of Friday Harbor Airport in the San Juan Islands.

He was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where a nursing supervisor on Sunday said Bach remained in serious condition.

Bach’s son, James Bach, said Sunday morning that his 76-year-old father hasn’t been able to say anything because he has a tube down his throat, but he is responding to doctors and people around him, and he has good cognitive function.

“He clearly is lucid and that’s the most important thing with the head injury, that he’s got his mind,” James Bach said. “We think it’s a big improvement from yesterday and we’re hoping that this recovery will continue to be swift. We’re happy there are no complications.”

Police say burglar left his ID behind

BUTTE – A Butte man who police say left behind an identification card after attempting to use it to open the back-door lock on a home has been charged with felony attempted burglary and misdemeanor disorderly conduct.

The Montana Standard reports that 36-year-old Ronald Traynor was charged Friday, a day after the homeowner reported spotting a man trying to break into his home.

Police say that besides the ID they found a lock had been tampered with and a window screen had been removed.

Police say Traynor was arrested Thursday.
