U-Hi outlasts Shadle in GSL
The University Titans (1-2) offense exploded for five first-half touchdowns and the defense picked off Shadle Park Highlanders (1-2) quarterback Brett Rypien four times on the day en route to a 48-35 Greater Spokane League victory on Saturday afternoon at Albi Stadium.
Rypien did manage a pair of touchdown passes, including a 13-yarder to Alvin Welch.
No scoring details were available for the Titans.
Pullman 42, Moscow 28: Jackson Kincaid scored on a pair of 1-yard runs in the third quarter and the Greyhounds (2-1) scored 28 straight points over the second and third quarters to pull out a nonleague home win over the Bears (0-4). Pullman’s Justin Cillay passed for 294 yards and a TD and ran for two scores.
Medical Lake 34, Newport 7: Micah Tappero rushed 29 times for 193 yards and four touchdowns to lead the visiting Cardinals to a victory over the Grizzlies in Northeast A League action Friday night.
Braden Parranco scored on a 35-yard run for Newport.
Boys soccer
Anthony Fox took a pass from Jeremiah Gagnon and scored in the final minute of play to lift the visiting Sandpoint Bulldogs (5-3, 1-1) to a 2-1 victory over the Moscow Bears (0-4, 0-1) in Inland Empire League 4A play.
Girls soccer
Erica Simpson scored in the 78th minute to rally the visiting Post Falls Trojans (3-3, 2-0) to a 3-2 victory over the Lake City Timberwolves (1-4, 0-1) in Inland Empire League 5A action.
Cross country
Andrew Gardner of Mead and Sanne Holland of Cheney won the senior division races at the Mead Invitational.
Gardner clocked in at 16 minutes, 31 seconds to beat Central Valley’s Logan Giese by 9 seconds in the boys race.
Holland blew away the girls field, finishing in 19:00, to easily outpace runner-up Anna Henry (20:17) of Northwest Christian.
Other boys winners were: junior, Matt Hommel (CV, 17:07), sophomore, Spencer Jensen (CV, 16:49), freshman, Will Medallin (Mead, 17:43).
Other girls winners were: junior Sam Yang (Mead, 20:46), sophomore Harley Strope (Reardan, 21:01), and freshman Peighton Colliver (Mead, 21:22).
• The Coeur d’Alene Vikings won the large school boys and girls titles at the CdA Invite.
The boys beat Lake City by virtue of a tiebreaker (sixth- and seventh-place finishers for each school) after they both tied with 42 points. CdA was led by the fourth- and fifth-place finishes of Michael Dunton (16:11.2) and Kenny Colbert (16:17.1). Lake City’s Kyler Little (15:55.6) was runner-up to Sam Levora (15:35.8) of Sandpoint.
The CdA girls breezed to the title by virtue of a 1-2-3 finish by Josie Brown (18:42.5), Punky Duran (18:45.9) and Emily Callahan (18:56.4). The Vikings ran past runner-up Sandpoint 21-67.
Timberlake’s boys edged out Bonners Ferry 46-50 to win the boys small school portion of the meet. Ryan Richardson (16:37.5) and Sam St. Mars (16:56.6) finished 2-3 for Timberlake. CdA Charter’s Leif Fredericks was the individual winner in 16:33.8.
Timberlake’s girls topped runner-up CdA Charter 37-51 to win the girls small school title. Rachel Ward of Timberlake was the individual winner in 19:56.3.
