Obituary: Tiffany, Howard I.

Age 96

TIFFANY, Howard I.

(Age 96) A longtime resident of Colville died Saturday April 06, 2013 at Cashmere Convalescent Center in Cashmere, Washington.

He was born November 6, 1916 in Vancouver, WA, the sixth of seven children to Orrin Charles Tiffany and Almira May (Pierce) Tiffany.

His family had a farm in Vancouver, WA where he was raised and educated.

After graduating high school, he went to business college for a short time.

He later worked at the paper mill in Camas and did some logging with his brother, Jess.

Howard enlisted in the United States Navy on Jan. 29, 1942.

He served on the coast of North Africa as a harbor master until he got malaria and was shipped stateside to recuperate.

He then was assigned to a ship patrolling the South Pacific and participated in the shelling of Borneo.

He was honorably discharged with a Good Conduct Medal on November 12, 1945.

Howard met his wife, Patsy Greene, during a ski trip to Mount Hood with the Vancouver Ski Club.

They were married on August 14, 1948.

At this time, he was working as an auto mechanic.

Together they had three children: Katie, Rob and Sue.

In 1956, Patsy and Howard bought a resort on Curlew Lake from Patsy’s aunt, Etta Perry Hawley.

They owned Tiffany’s Resort for over ten years.

In 1967, the family moved to Pacific Beach, WA where they bought some land in hopes of building a motel and while he tried to finance the project, he worked for a car dealership in Hoquiam.

In 1969 they moved to Colville where he worked for a chainsaw shop and later the US Forest Service as a survey crew chief.

In 1972, he began building a new home, which he finished a year later.

This was the experience he needed to begin a construction company (Tiffany Construction) and build homes on spec.

He built a total of nine houses, one a year for the next nine years, and retired at the age of 65.

Howard had passion for outdoor activities.

He was an avid and expert snow-skier, spending a minimum of two days a week at Red Mountain near Rossland, B.C.

during the winters after he retired.

He went helicopter skiing in the Monashees and Bugaboos of Canada almost every year, the last time when he was 90 years old.

He continued to ski until three years ago.

He learned to wind surf in his retirement and spent many hours with his sail board on Lake Roosevelt well into his 80’s.

He also loved to golf, fish, hunt and water ski.

The summer after his 90th birthday he did a tandem jump out of an airplane!

He is Survived by his Daughters, Katie (Bob) Haney and Sue (Tom) McGrath; Son, Rob Tiffany (Nancy); seven Grandchildren, Jeff Haney, Stacy Ferney, Betsy Duchesne, Jody Lenius, Jared Tiffany, Megan Magrath, Brian Magrath; eleven Great-grandchildren, Evan, Corinne, Isabel, Samantha, Isaac, Olive, Eliana, Liam, Ian, Cameron, & Payton.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy, and four brothers, Charles Tiffany, Harold Tiffany, Jess Tiffany and Everett Tiffany; two sisters, Dorothy Camets and Dorcas Resleff.

A memorial service of commemoration to celebrate the life of Howard I. Tiffany will be held on Saturday April 20, 2013 at 11:00 AM at the Colville Community Church at 930 S. Elm St., Colville, WA.

Memorial contributions may be made in Howard’s name to the Colville Food and Resource Center, 210 S. Wynne St., Colville, WA.
