Calling All Cars
New device gives drivers remote control of their vehicles .
A new Vehicle Diagnostics system from Delphi Electronics in Troy, Mich. allows Verizon smartphone users to monitor and control their vehicles remotely.
Utilizing a small sensor that plugs into a car’s OBD (onboard diagnostics) port beneath the dashboard, a downloadable smartphone app can be used to replicate key fob commands away from the vehicle, including the ability to lock/unlock a vehicle, open the trunk, start it remotely or sound a panic alert. It can also identify a car’s location, monitor its status and diagnose engine health, and keep a watchful eye on teen drivers and valet parking attendants by scrutinizing driving behavior and sounding an alert when the car exits a prescribed area.
The Vehicle Diagnostics system will be available this spring through Verizon Wireless stores at a yet-to-be-determined price for Android 2.2 and later and iOS 5.0 and later phones.
