In brief: Green eggs, scams from BBB

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Better Business Bureau is presenting a free “Green Eggs and Scams” program on Wednesday from 9 to 11:45 a.m. at Good Samaritan Society, 17121 E. Eighth Ave.

The program features experts explaining how to avoid common scams, fraud and financial abuse that target seniors, and it includes breakfast. Register by calling (509) 232-0534.

YWCA nominees needed

DOWNTOWN – The YWCA of Spokane is seeking nominations for its Women of Achievement Award.

The YWCA is looking for local women who inspire and improve the community in the categories of: Arts and Culture, Volunteer Community Service, Social and Racial Justice as well as Professional and Young Professional woman of Achievement.

Newman Lake sale Aug. 10

NEWMAN LAKE – The Newman Lake community garage sale is Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Tri-Community Grange, located on Starr Road one block north of Trent Avenue. Organizers expect to have hundreds of items for sale.

Fundraiser honors Badinger

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Central Valley High School graduating classes of 1976 through 1980 will host “Buy Your Way Home,” a softball game Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at CV, 821 S. Sullivan Road.

The game will give fans and players a chance to pledge money to advance players around the bases, score runs or buy an out.

All funds raised will go to Jansen’s Door, a foundation intended to provide short-term financial assistance to CV students who are in need and might not otherwise be able to participate in an activity, event or have supplies for school.

The foundation has been set up to honor recent CV grad Jansen Badinger who drowned July 23 in the Spokane River. The foundation was named “Jansen’s Door,” after Badinger’s habit of greeting students and staff at the front door of the school every morning.

New council meeting place

LIBERTY LAKE – The location of the special City Council meeting scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Sunday has been changed.

The meeting will take place in the downstairs banquet room at the Trailhead Golf Course, 1102 N. Liberty Lake Road. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the 2014 budget.

Classic car show Aug. 16-18

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Goodguys 30th anniversary car show takes place at Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St., on Aug. 16-18.

Expect more than 1,500 cars from 1972 or earlier, as well vendors and commercial booths, food and music.

Hours are Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission: $15; 7-12 years old, $6; 6 and younger admitted free.

Bring two cans of food on Friday and receive a $3 discount on admission. Food will be donated to Second Harvest Food Bank.
