FCS playoffs: Grizzlies ousted in second round

Alex Ross threw three touchdown passes and Lorenzo Taliaferro rushed for two TDs as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (12-2) beat the No. 8 seed Montana Grizzlies 42-35 in the second round of the FCS playoffs Saturday at Missoula.

Coastal Carolina, which survived minus-5 degrees at kickoff, will play at two-time defending champion and No. 1 seed North Dakota State next weekend.

Jordan Johnson passed for 388 yards and four TDs for Montana (10-3).

Jacksonville State 31, McNeese State 10: DaMarcus James ran for 124 yards and three TDs to lead the Gamecocks (11-3) to a victory over the Cowboys (10-3) at Lake Charles, La.

Jacksonville State won for the first time in eight tries against McNeese State and advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time. The Gamecocks will play next weekend at No. 3 Eastern Washington.

N orth Dakota State 38, Furman 7: Brock Jensen threw a touchdown and had a long run for another in the second half as the Bison (12-0) pulled away from the Paladins (8-6) at Fargo, N.D.

Southeast Louisiana 30, Sam Houston State 29: Bryan Bennett passed for two TDs and ran for another to lead the Lions (11-2) over the Bearkats (9-5) at Hammond, La.

New Hampshire 41, Maine 27: Sean Goldrich threw for 291 yards and three TDs to lead the Wildcats (9-4) past the Black Bears (10-3) at Orono, Maine.

The Wildcats will play No. 4 Southeastern Louisiana in the next round.

Eastern Illinois 51, Tennessee State 10: Jimmy Garoppolo passed for 240 yards and three TDs as the Panthers (12-1) beat the Tigers (10-4) at Charleston, Ill.

Towson 48, Fordham 28: Terrance West upped his nation-leading touchdown total to 33 with three on 24 carries and the Tigers (11-2) cruised past the Rams (12-2) in Towson, Md.

Towson moves on to play No. 2 Eastern Illinois next week.
