Area roundup: Huskies win volleyball thriller over Trojans
Gabbi Parker’s back-to-back kills in the fifth set gave the Washington volleyball team a thrilling come-from-behind win over Southern California in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament Saturday night at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.
Scores were 26-28, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18 and 17-15.
Krista Vansant had 38 kills and 30 digs for the Huskies. Kaleigh Nelson added 14 kills and Cassie Strickland had 11 kills and 15 digs.
UW’s Jenni Nogueras and Katy Beals combined for 73 assists.
Seven of Vansant’s kills came in the final set. The Huskies had a 7-5 lead in the fifth before USC scored four straight. From there it went back and forth, with Parker’s kills sealing it for the Huskies.
Ebony Nwanebu had 30 kills and Alexis Olgard (Mead High School) had nine kills and eight blocks for the Trojans (29-6).
The win gave the Huskies (30-2) their first trip to the Final Four since 2006. They’ll play Penn State Thursday in Seattle.
Penn State (32-2) advanced with a five-set win over Stanford (27-6).
Wrestling
North Idaho beat Clackamas and Southwestern Oregon in Coeur d’Alene.
The Cardinals won five of 10 matches and edged Clackamas 24-17 in their first match. They fared much better in their second match, claiming 9 of 10 matches and beating Southwestern Oregon 48-5.
Terrance McKinney (141 pounds), Jeremy Golding (149), Nicholas Moreno (157), V.J. Giulio (197) and Taylor Kornoely (285) all went 2-0 for NIC.
Junior hockey
Tanner Stolz and Paxtone Malone scored two goals apiece as the Spokane Braves blanked the Kelowna Chiefs 7-0 in a Kootenay International Junior Hockey League game in Kelowna, B.C.
Coleman Macdonald, Kurtis Redding and Hayden Boring also scored for the Braves.
Spokane goalkeeper Jon Manlow stopped 39 shots.
Spokane improved to 12-18-0-3 and Kelowna fell to 20-9-0-3. The Braves play at Summerland today.
