Obituary: Ulijohn, Ruby A.
Age 101
Parents were Ida Mae Hunting and George York.
Ruby grew up believing that Louis Hines was her father because Ida and George had divorced when she was quite young and everyone kept the secret from her.
She grew up in Bozemen, Montana and graduated from Gallatin County High School in 1931.
She married Frank Judd Ulijohn February 14, 1931.
One daughter, Hilma, and two sons, Harvey and Frank, made up their family.
George York sent $600 to the young family so they could travel to the Philippine Islands where Frank was employed in a gold mine.
They were there from May 1933 to November 1935.
Rumors of war brought them back to Bozeman.
They came home on a Norwegian freighter.
June 1942 Frank and Ruby moved to Spokane, Washington.
Both Ruby and Frank worked at the Naval Supply Depot.
She started work in 1944 and worked there 13 years.
In May 1957 she became supervisor of Selective Service under the Department of Defense.
She retired in June 1974.
Some of those years were difficult because of the opposition to the draft especially during the Vietnam conflict.
For many of those years Ruby was the bread winner as Frank was ill. Their social life centered around music and they were charter members of the Hammond Organ Club.
Frank died March 2, 1985 after 54 years of marriage.
Frank Jr. died May 28, 2005.
Ruby was involved with community activities after she retired.
She volunteered at the Discovery Shop sponsored by the American Cancer Society.
She was a member of the Rebekah organization and attended Fourth Memorial Church.
She knitted and crocheted many caps for the Caps for Kids program.
She was an honorary member of NARFE.
She was an avid reader and was interested in current events.
She wrote original poetry to commemorate many family occasions.
She moved to Riverview Retirement Home June 2004.
Survivors are daughter, Hilma Bloomsburg and husband George Bloomsburg; and son, Harvey Ulijohn and wife Karen Ulijohn; and daughter-in-law, Elke Ulijohn.
She had ten grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Hers was a life well-lived.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at a later date.
Memorial gifts may be donated to The American Cancer Society or the Union Gospel Mission.
