Retired UC Santa Barbara women’s volleyball coach Kathy Gregory, whose 882 wins are fifth-most in NCAA Division I history, retired on Monday after 38 years as the only person to hold that job in school history. Gregory guided the Gauchos to NCAA final- eight appearances in 1997, 1999 and 2000, and final 16 berths in 1998 and 2002. Her teams reached 27 NCAA tournaments. She was a seven-time Big West Conference coach of the year. In 2002, the Gauchos had a school-record 23-match winning streak, went 18-0 in league play and finished with a 30-3 overall record, the best in UCSB history. Under Gregory, 13 UCSB players earned All-America honors.
Returned TCU quarterback Casey Pachall has completed substance abuse rehabilitation and returned to the team. Coach Gary Patterson said Pachall took part in team meetings Sunday, a day before school resumed.
Signed Reliever J.J. Putz has agreed to a $13.5 million, two-year contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, a deal that adds a $7 million salary for 2014. Arizona exercised Putz’s $6.5 million option on Oct. 20 and he would have been eligible for free agency after the 2013 season.
Dismissed Prosecutors have dismissed a sexual abuse charge against Iowa State basketball player Bubu Palo. Palo was suspended from the team in September after being charged with sexually abusing a woman he was driving home in May.
Pregnant Two years after discovering she had a rare form of ovarian cancer, Olympic champion gymnast Shannon Miller is expecting her second child. Miller is due this summer.
