Obituary: Shagina, Frederick Matthew “Fred”

Age 84

SHAGINA, Frederick Matthew “Fred” Born: April 13, 1929 Died July 19, 2013 Fred was born on April 13, 1929 in Anaconda, MT to Matt and Barbara Shagina.

He attended St. Peter’s Grade School and graduated with the class of 1947 at Anaconda Central High School.

He was active in high school sports, playing football and baseball.

After high school, he enrolled at Montana State College in Bozeman.

Activities included playing two years of football before being drafted into military service due to the Korean Conflict.

Fred spent two years with the U.S. Marine Corps in California and Japan, attaining the rank of sergeant before receiving an honorable discharge in 1953.

He then completed college receiving his Bachelor degree in Applied Art in 1955.

This led to a teaching career as an art teacher at North Pines Jr. High School for 27 years.

Fred also completed work on his master’s degree at University of Montana in Missoula in 1960.

During that time he met his wife Elizabeth (Beth) Murphy and they were married that summer at the Immaculate Conception Church in Butte, MT on Aug. 20th 1960.

From this union three children and eight grandchildren were born.

After retiring in 1983, Fred and Beth enjoyed traveling with trips to Mexico, Hawaii, and Italy as well as many U.S. destinations and thoroughly enjoyed being with family and cherished the time spent with all the grandchildren and their school activities and sport events.

Fred is survived by wife, Beth; children Lori (Stan) Gfeller, Steve Shagina, Kris (Mike) Elgas.

Grandchildren: Nick Gfeller, Jordan Shagina, Brandon Gfeller, Alex Elgas, Keith Gfeller, Blake Elgas, Carmen Gfeller, Symone Shagina Memorial Mass will be on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 11:00 am at St. John Vianney Catholic Church.

Inurnment will be on Monday, July 29, 2013 at 2:15 pm at Washington State Veterans Cemetery.
