Obituary: Campbell, Evelyn

CAMPBELL, Evelyn Evelyn (Eve) Cain Campbell died Monday, May 13, 2013, in Spokane, Washington.

Eve was born June 1, 1932, in New York, New York, to Evelyn (Hanley) and Reuben L. Cain.

She spent her childhood in Narberth, Pennsylvania, where she was confirmed in the Episcopal Church and attended school through her junior year at Lower Merion High School.

In 1949, she moved to Flushing, New York, with her family.

She graduated from Flushing High School in 1950.

Following high school, Eve studied fashion design at Parson’s School of Design in New York, and was awarded her diploma in 1954.

She was a very talented designer, and worked for a time in the fashion industry in New York City.

She married William F. (Bill) Campbell, Jr., in 1957, in a graduation day ceremony on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy, in West Point, New York.

While Bill served in the U.S. Air Force, they made homes in various locations throughout the south, lastly in Charleston, South Carolina, where their children William and Katherine were born.

This was a very happy time for Eve and she had many fond memories of her years there.

In 1964, the family moved to Washington State, first to Bellevue and then on to Everett.

Eve enjoyed her work as a licensed real estate agent and continued to express herself artistically through writing, painting, decorating, acting with the community theater, and designing costumes.

Although she was never published, Eve wrote several short stories over the years.

She was an avid skier and often journeyed to Stevens Pass with her skiing buddies, “the girls,” for a day on the slopes.

Eve and Bill were divorced in 1975.

Eve pursued her dream of owning a business and in 1977 she opened Serendipity Boutique in Everett.

She thrilled at this new endeavor, going to market and bringing back exotic clothing and treasures for her customers.

It was a difficult and disappointing time for Eve when the boutique was closed due to illness in 1979.

She subsequently moved to Spokane to be near her son and his family.

Throughout her life, Eve was known for her snappy sense of humor and quick wit.

She was intelligent and creative.

And no matter where life took her, she remained an East Coast girl at heart.

Eve was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved aunt Estelle Riley and cousin Ada Shearon.

She is survived by her son William F. Campbell, III (Sherry) of Spokane Washington; daughter Katherine Campbell Heller (Michael) of Laramie, Wyoming; grand- children Kayleen Campbell, William F. Campbell, IV, James Hedeen (Tessa), and Spencer Hedeen; two great-grandchildren Katie Jeffrey and Finley Rushton; and her half-brother Dr. Michael E. Cain, of Buffalo, New York.

The family wishes to acknowledge and thank Eve’s many wonderful friends and caregivers at Royal Park Nursing Home, and the staff and volunteers of Hospice of Spokane, all of whom cared for her so lovingly through the end of her life.

Cremation has taken place and a private family celebration of Eve’s life will take place this summer.
