A recent survey reached the unfortunate conclusion that, if given on the spot, nearly half of all motorists couldn’t pass a written driver’s license exam. In a mock test of 20 questions culled from state department of motor vehicles tests given to 500 random drivers age 18 and older by CarInsurance.com, 44 percent of drivers scored less than 80 percent, which is typically the minimum passing grade.
The most missed questions included rules regarding pedestrians (58 percent of respondents didn’t know when to give them the right-of-way) and school buses (68 percent were clueless regarding what to do when one is stopped on the other side of a divided highway).
On the other hand, 93 percent of those polled knew that one should engage a car’s horn specifically for warning purposes. “We may have great horn skills, but we’ve got some work to do otherwise,” says CarInsurance.com managing editor Des Toups.
