Obituary: Budig, Julius “Vern”

Age 90

BUDIG, Julius “Vern” Age 90 Vern had gone to heaven peacefully strong early Sunday morning on September 29, 2013.

Vern was born on April 20, 1923, in Gallop, NM to his parents, Julius John Budig and Ella Sara Budig.

Vern’s brothers and sisters are: Leo Budig, “Sister” Clara Budig, Al Budig, Lily “Toots” McCarter, Ed Budig, Jane Potesky, and Pete Budig.

Vern played basketball at Gonzaga Prep, and he graduated from Prep in 1943.

After graduation, Uncle Sam sent Vern a letter that he had been drafted into WWII, and he trained in Farragut, ID to be a medic in the Navy and Marines during WWII.

Vern Budig is survived by his pride and joy of 67 years, Martha “Joyce” Budig.

Joyce was Vern’s smile, and he loved Joyce.

Vern held her hand in peace as he went to heaven.

Vern and Joyce’s kids are: Don Budig, Lynn Kinnunen, and John Budig.

Their grandchildren are: Mike Budig, Derek Budig, Stacy Budig Byus, Patrick Budig, Jessica Kinnunen Ormond, “Little” John Budig, and the twins, Megan and Josh Budig.

Their great-grandchildren are: Jarod Budig, Kate Budig, Taylor Budig, Chase Long-Bos, Julius Budig, Malaki Budig, Kelsie Byus, Ryan Byus, Dean Ormond, Hunter Ormond, and Dylan Ormond.

After WWII, Vern returned home to Spokane, WA where he met his wife Joyce.

Vern graduated from Gonzaga with a B.A.

in accounting and also a teaching certificate.

He taught at La Cross, Tekoa, Rockford, and was at West Valley High Schools as a teacher/librarian for 28 years.

Vern ran the WVHS rifle club, was a volunteer on the Tekoa fire department, a little league baseball coach, an Elk, owner of Spokane Valley Floral for 20 years, and Vern was raised a Roman Catholic.

He was a devoted Catholic during his life on Earth.

Vern always said, “If I could make it to Mass during war, I will make it to Mass since I made it home.”

Vern liked golfing, going to the lake, fishing, basketball, German chocolate cake, Notre Dame Football, and much, much more.

Vern was the best friend you could ever have; you are missed.
